I spent years thinking about accessibility as a human problem. Semantic HTML for screen readers. Keyboard navigation for motor disabilities. Color contrast for low vision. Then agents showed up, and I realized they have the same problem users with assistive technology have always had: your software wasn’t built for how they interact with it.

Agent accessibility means making your APIs, interfaces, and software products usable by AI agents. Not just “technically callable,” but genuinely usable: discoverable, predictable, and self-describing. An agent hitting your API faces the same fundamental challenge a screen reader faces on a webpage. Both need structure, semantics, and predictability to do their job.

Most developers already build APIs that other developers can integrate with. But agents aren’t developers. They can’t read your Confluence docs, guess at undocumented behavior, or work around inconsistencies by reading the source code. They need the same things assistive technology needs: explicit, machine-readable descriptions of what your software does and how to interact with it.

What this is (and isn’t): This article explains agent accessibility principles and trade-offs, focusing on why making software agent-accessible matters and how the core pieces fit together. Why agent accessibility fundamentals matter:

  • Broader reach - Agents already consume APIs alongside humans. Software that agents can’t use gets bypassed.
  • Reduced integration friction - Agent-accessible software requires less custom glue code, fewer wrapper layers, and less ongoing maintenance.
  • Better software overall - The same properties that make software agent-accessible (clear schemas, predictable behavior, good error messages) make it better for human consumers too.
  • Future readiness - Agent interaction patterns are solidifying into standards. Building for them now avoids expensive retrofits later.

The workflow mirrors human accessibility: start with structure, add descriptions, ensure predictable behavior, then validate.

Section 1: The Accessibility Parallel - Why Agents Are the New Assistive Technology

When a screen reader encounters a webpage, it builds a model of the page’s structure from semantic HTML, ARIA attributes, and the accessibility tree. It doesn’t “see” the page. It reads the machine-readable description of the page and presents it to the user.

Agents do the same thing with your API. They read your OpenAPI spec, your MCP server definition, or your A2A agent card. They build a model of what your software does, what parameters it accepts, and what responses it returns. Then they decide how to interact with it.

The parallel runs deep:

What They Share

Structure over appearance. A screen reader doesn’t care about your CSS. An agent doesn’t care about your developer portal’s visual design. Both care about the underlying structure. Semantic HTML helps screen readers the same way structured API metadata helps agents: it makes meaning explicit rather than implied.

Explicit descriptions. An alt attribute tells a screen reader what an image contains. An OpenAPI description field tells an agent what an endpoint does. Both exist because the consumer can’t infer meaning from visual context alone.

Predictable navigation. Keyboard users expect Tab to move through interactive elements in document order. Agents expect API endpoints to behave as documented, with consistent parameter names, response shapes, and error formats. Surprises break both workflows.

Standards-driven. Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) standardized how to make websites human-accessible. Protocols like Model Context Protocol (MCP) and Agent-to-Agent (A2A) are standardizing how to make software agent-accessible. Both give you a shared vocabulary and checklist.

Where They Diverge

The analogy isn’t perfect. Human accessibility and agent accessibility differ in important ways:

Agents don’t need sensory accommodations. Color contrast, font sizing, audio alternatives: none of these matter to agents. Agents consume structured data, not rendered interfaces.

Agents need rate and cost awareness. Human users rarely exhaust your API rate limits in seconds. Agents can and will. Agent-accessible software must communicate rate limits, token budgets, and cost information in machine-readable formats.

Agents retry autonomously. A human user who gets an error reads the message and decides what to do. An agent needs structured information about whether to retry, when to retry, and what to change before retrying.

Agents compose operations. A human user typically follows a single path through your interface. An agent might chain dozens of API calls to accomplish a higher-level goal. Your API’s composability (can operations be meaningfully combined?) matters more for agents than for human users.

Agents need permission boundaries. A human user understands social context about what they should and shouldn’t do. An agent needs explicit, machine-readable permission boundaries. Without them, agents will attempt anything the API technically allows.

The Shared Investment

The good news: many accessibility investments pay off twice. Semantic HTML improves screen reader support and makes your pages easier for agents to scrape. Well-structured APIs with clear schemas serve both human developers and agent consumers. Good error messages help everyone.

If you’ve already invested in software accessibility, you have a head start on agent accessibility. The mindset is the same: don’t assume your consumer interacts with your software the way you do.

You can name divergences like rate limiting awareness and autonomous retry logic. You can honestly assess whether your API is self-describing enough for an agent to use.

If you struggle to evaluate your API from an agent’s perspective, that’s a strong signal that agent accessibility is worth investing in.

Section 2: Discoverability - Letting Agents Find You

A screen reader can’t use a button that isn’t in the accessibility tree. An agent can’t use an API endpoint it doesn’t know exists. Discoverability is the first step in agent accessibility: can an agent find your capabilities and understand what they do?

How Agents Discover Capabilities

Agents discover software capabilities through several mechanisms, each with different trade-offs:

OpenAPI specifications. The OpenAPI Specification (OAS) remains the most widely supported way to describe REST APIs. An OpenAPI document tells agents what endpoints exist, what parameters they accept, what responses they return, and what authentication they require. Agents can read an OpenAPI spec and generate valid API calls without any human guidance.

Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP standardizes how agents connect to external tools and data sources. An MCP server publishes a set of tools (functions the agent can call), resources (data the agent can read), and prompts (templates for common interactions). MCP removes the need for agents to parse API documentation or build custom integrations.

Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol. A2A enables agents to discover and communicate with other agents. Each A2A server publishes an Agent Card at /.well-known/agent-card.json that describes the agent’s capabilities, supported interaction modes, and authentication requirements. This is agent-to-agent discoverability, not human-to-agent.

Well-known endpoints. Following RFC 8615, many services publish metadata at standardized paths like /.well-known/openapi, /.well-known/agent-card.json, or /.well-known/mcp.json. These give agents a predictable starting point for discovery without requiring out-of-band configuration.

Why Discoverability Matters More for Agents

Human developers can compensate for poor discoverability. They search Stack Overflow, read blog posts, email the API team, or reverse-engineer behavior from examples. Agents can’t do any of that. If your capabilities aren’t explicitly described in a format the agent understands, they don’t exist from the agent’s perspective.

This is the same problem that makes <div onclick="..."> invisible to screen readers. The functionality exists, but agents can’t discover it through the standard interface. A <button> element is discoverable because it participates in the accessibility tree. An OpenAPI-described endpoint is discoverable because it participates in the agent’s capability model.

Making Your Software Discoverable

Start with what you already have and layer agent-specific metadata on top:

Publish an OpenAPI spec. If you have a REST API, an OpenAPI spec is the minimum viable agent accessibility. Most API frameworks can generate one automatically, but auto-generated specs often lack the descriptions and examples that agents need to use endpoints correctly. Treat your OpenAPI spec like you’d treat alt text: auto-generated placeholders aren’t enough.

Add rich descriptions. Every endpoint, parameter, and response schema should have a human-readable description field. Agents use these descriptions to decide which endpoint to call and how to structure their request. Vague descriptions like “Gets the thing” are the API equivalent of alt="image".

Provide examples. OpenAPI supports example and examples fields at multiple levels. Include them. Agents use examples to understand expected formats, especially for complex request bodies. Examples are the agent equivalent of sample interactions in a tutorial.

Consider MCP for tool-oriented interfaces. If your software exposes discrete operations (create a record, run a query, trigger a deployment), MCP is a natural fit. MCP’s tool abstraction maps well to operations that agents chain together to accomplish goals.

Trade-offs and Limitations

Discoverability mechanisms have real costs:

Maintenance burden. An OpenAPI spec that drifts from your actual API behavior is worse than no spec at all. Agents will make calls based on the spec and fail when the behavior doesn’t match. Keep specs generated from code or validated in CI.

Oversharing capabilities. Publishing every internal endpoint to agents creates security risks. Agent-facing specs should be curated, not exhaustive. Expose what agents should use, not everything they could theoretically call.

Protocol fragmentation. As of early 2026, 11 competing IETF drafts target agent discovery alone, plus MCP, A2A, and various vendor-specific approaches. Betting on one protocol is a risk. Start with OpenAPI (the most broadly supported) and add protocol-specific layers as they stabilize.

Quick Check: Discoverability

Before moving on, test your understanding:

  • Does your API have an OpenAPI spec? Is it accurate and current?
  • Do your endpoint descriptions explain what the endpoint does and when to use it, or just restate the endpoint path?
  • Could an agent discover your API’s capabilities without any human configuration or documentation?

If unsure, try feeding your OpenAPI spec to an LLM and asking it to describe your API’s capabilities. If the LLM gets it wrong, your spec needs better descriptions.

Answer guidance: Ideal result: Your API has an accurate, up-to-date OpenAPI spec with meaningful descriptions and examples. An agent could read it and correctly identify what your API does.

If your spec is auto-generated with placeholder descriptions, start by enriching the descriptions for your most-used endpoints.

Section 3: Machine-Readable Interfaces - Describing What You Do

Discoverability tells agents your software exists. Machine-readable interfaces tell agents exactly how to interact with it. This is the difference between knowing a door exists and knowing whether it pushes, pulls, or slides.

Schemas Are Your Interface Contract

For human users, the interface is visual: buttons, forms, labels, layout. For agents, the interface is the schema: request shapes, response shapes, types, constraints, and relationships between fields.

A well-defined schema tells an agent:

  • What fields to send and what types they must be.
  • Which fields are required versus optional.
  • What valid values look like (enums, patterns, ranges).
  • What the response will contain and in what structure.

This is analogous to how ARIA roles tell assistive technology what a custom widget is and how it behaves. Without ARIA, a custom dropdown is just a <div> with mysterious click behavior. Without a schema, an API endpoint is just a URL that accepts unknown input and returns unknown output.

Structured Responses

Agents parse responses programmatically. Every inconsistency in your response format creates a potential parsing failure. Design your responses for machine consumption:

Consistent shapes. Return the same response structure for all success cases and a separate, consistent structure for all error cases. Don’t return a bare string for one endpoint and a nested object for another.

Explicit nulls and empty values. Don’t omit fields when they’re empty. An agent can’t distinguish between “this field is null” and “this field doesn’t exist in this response” if you drop null fields. Include them explicitly.

Typed fields. Don’t return numbers as strings, dates as ambiguous formats, or booleans as “yes”/“no” strings. Use the types your schema declares. Agents trust your schema; violated type expectations cause silent failures downstream.

Pagination metadata. If a response is paginated, include machine-readable pagination information (next page URL or cursor, total count, page size). Without it, agents can’t tell whether they’ve retrieved all results.

Input Validation and Constraints

Tell agents what valid input looks like before they send a request, not after they get a validation error:

Use JSON Schema constraints. OpenAPI’s schema objects support minimum, maximum, pattern, enum, minLength, maxLength, and other constraints. Use them. If you declare constraints in the schema, agents can validate their own requests before sending them.

Document side effects. If an endpoint creates a resource, charges money, sends an email, or triggers an irreversible action, say so in the description. Agents need to know an endpoint’s consequences before calling it. This is the agent equivalent of confirmation dialogs for destructive actions.

Declare required fields explicitly. Don’t rely on the agent guessing which fields are required. The required array in JSON Schema exists for this purpose.

Content Negotiation

Agents may prefer different response formats than human consumers. Support content negotiation where practical:

JSON as default. JSON is the most widely supported format for agent consumption. If you only support one format, make it JSON.

Structured alternatives for complex output. If your API returns rich content (reports, analytics, documents), offer structured formats alongside rendered ones. An HTML report is useful for humans. A JSON representation of the same data is useful for agents.

Quick Check: Machine-Readable Interfaces

Before moving on, test your understanding:

  • Do your API responses use consistent shapes across all endpoints?
  • Are your input constraints declared in your OpenAPI schema, or only enforced server-side?
  • Do you include null fields in responses, or silently drop them?

If unsure, compare the response shapes from three different endpoints in your API. If they follow different conventions for wrapping data, indicating errors, or handling empty values, your interface isn’t consistently machine-readable.

Answer guidance: Ideal result: All endpoints return consistently shaped responses. Input constraints are declared in the schema. Null fields appear explicitly. An agent could write a single response parser that works across your entire API.

If your response shapes vary across endpoints, standardize on a single envelope format and migrate endpoints incrementally.

Section 4: Predictable Behavior - Acting Like You Said You Would

Keyboard users rely on Tab moving focus in document order. If Tab jumped to random elements, keyboard navigation would be useless. Agents rely on your API behaving as your schema describes. If behavior deviates from the contract, agent interactions break.

Idempotency

Agents operate in unreliable environments. Network timeouts, rate limits, transient failures: agents encounter all of these and need to retry. If retrying an operation creates duplicate records, sends duplicate emails, or charges a customer twice, your API isn’t agent-safe.

Why idempotency matters for agents: A human user who gets a timeout can check whether the operation succeeded before retrying. An agent needs to retry automatically. Idempotent operations (where repeating the same request produces the same result) make automatic retries safe.

Idempotency keys. For operations that can’t be inherently idempotent (like creating a new resource), support idempotency keys. The agent sends a unique key with the request. If the same key is sent again, return the original result instead of creating a duplicate.

If the agent retries this request with the same idempotency key, the server returns the originally created order rather than creating a second one.

HTTP method semantics. GET, PUT, and DELETE should be idempotent per HTTP semantics. POST is inherently non-idempotent, which is why POST endpoints benefit most from idempotency key support. Following standard HTTP semantics helps agents predict behavior without endpoint-specific documentation.

Stable Contracts

Agents build behavior on top of your API contract. Breaking changes break agent workflows, often silently:

Don’t remove fields from responses. An agent that expects a shipping_address field will fail if you remove it. Deprecate fields (mark them in the schema and stop populating them with new data) before removing them.

Don’t change field types. If quantity was an integer, don’t make it a string. Even if the string contains a number, the agent’s parser will reject it.

Don’t change endpoint behavior. If GET /users returns all users and you change it to return only active users, agents that depend on the old behavior break. Add a new parameter (?status=active) instead.

Version your API. When breaking changes are necessary, use versioning. URL-based versioning (/v1/, /v2/) is the most agent-friendly because the version is visible in the endpoint itself.

Rate Limiting and Backpressure

Agents can generate request volumes that human users never would. Your API needs to communicate rate limits in machine-readable formats:

Standard rate limit headers. Use RateLimit-Limit, RateLimit-Remaining, and RateLimit-Reset headers (per the IETF RateLimit header fields draft) so agents can pace their requests without hitting limits.

429 responses with Retry-After. When an agent does hit a rate limit, return a 429 Too Many Requests status with a Retry-After header. This tells the agent exactly when it can try again.

Distinguish rate limit scopes. If different endpoints have different rate limits, communicate this clearly. An agent that exhausts its rate limit on a low-priority endpoint can’t call the high-priority one it actually needs.

Quick Check: Predictable Behavior

Before moving on, test your understanding:

  • Are your POST endpoints safe to retry? Do you support idempotency keys?
  • Have you made any breaking changes to your API without versioning in the last year?
  • Do you return rate limit information in response headers?

If unsure, try calling a POST endpoint twice with the same data and see what happens. If you get two records, your API isn’t idempotent.

Answer guidance: Ideal result: POST endpoints support idempotency keys. GET, PUT, and DELETE are idempotent. Rate limits are communicated via standard headers. Breaking changes are versioned.

If your POST endpoints create duplicates on retry, adding idempotency key support is the highest-impact improvement you can make for agent consumers.

Section 5: Agent-Aware Error Handling - Helping Agents Recover

A human user who gets a “400 Bad Request” can read the error message, look at the form, and figure out what went wrong. An agent that gets a “400 Bad Request” with the body {"error": "Invalid input"} has almost nothing to work with. Agent-aware error handling gives agents enough information to diagnose and recover from failures programmatically.

Structured Error Responses

Every error response should be a structured JSON object with consistent fields:

Why each field matters:

  • code gives the agent a stable, machine-readable error type it can match against (unlike message, which might change wording).
  • message provides a human-readable explanation (useful for logging and debugging).
  • details tells the agent exactly which field failed and why, with enough information to construct a corrected request.
  • request_id enables correlation with server logs for debugging.

Retryable vs. Non-Retryable Errors

Agents need to know whether retrying will help. A validation error won’t fix itself on retry. A rate limit will resolve after the cooldown period. A server error might be transient.

Signal retryability explicitly. Include a retryable boolean or use HTTP status codes consistently:

  • 400 (Bad Request): Don’t retry. Fix the request.
  • 401 (Unauthorized): Don’t retry with the same credentials. Re-authenticate.
  • 403 (Forbidden): Don’t retry. The agent doesn’t have permission.
  • 404 (Not Found): Don’t retry. The resource doesn’t exist.
  • 409 (Conflict): Maybe retry. Read the current state and resolve the conflict.
  • 429 (Too Many Requests): Retry after Retry-After duration.
  • 500 (Internal Server Error): Maybe retry with backoff.
  • 503 (Service Unavailable): Retry after Retry-After duration.

Validation Errors That Help Agents Self-Correct

Good validation errors include enough context for the agent to fix its request:

Name the field. Don’t say “Invalid input.” Say which field is invalid.

Explain the constraint. Don’t say “Invalid value.” Say the value must be a positive integer, or must match a specific pattern, or must be one of a specific set of values.

Include the invalid value. Let the agent see what it sent so it can understand the mismatch.

Suggest valid alternatives. If the agent sent an invalid enum value, include the list of valid values. If it sent a string that’s too long, include the maximum length.

An agent receiving this error can map “urgent” to “critical” (or ask its user to clarify) and retry with a valid value. Without the allowed_values list, the agent is stuck.

Before moving on, test your understanding:

  • Do your error responses include the specific field that failed validation?
  • Can an agent distinguish between retryable and non-retryable errors from your responses?
  • Do validation errors include enough information for the agent to construct a corrected request?

If unsure, deliberately send an invalid request to one of your endpoints and examine the error response. Could an agent (with no prior knowledge of your API beyond the schema) figure out how to fix the request?

Answer guidance: Ideal result: Your error responses include error codes, field-level details, constraint information, and the invalid values. Retryable errors include Retry-After headers. An agent could recover from most validation errors without human intervention.

If your error responses are generic strings, start by adding structured error objects to your most-called endpoints.

Section 6: Common Agent Accessibility Mistakes - What to Avoid

Common mistakes make software harder for agents to use. These mirror many human accessibility mistakes but manifest differently.

Mistake 1: Undocumented Side Effects

An endpoint that sends an email, triggers a webhook, or charges a credit card without documenting it is dangerous for agents. Agents call endpoints based on their documented behavior. Undocumented side effects lead to agents accidentally sending hundreds of emails or triggering unintended charges.

Mistake 2: Inconsistent Response Shapes

Returning different response structures from different endpoints, or worse, returning different structures from the same endpoint depending on the result, breaks agent parsers.

Mistake 3: Relying on Documentation Instead of Schemas

Writing “the date should be in ISO 8601 format” in your docs but not enforcing it in your schema means agents have to parse your documentation (which they often can’t do reliably) instead of reading your schema (which they can).

Incorrect: Constraints described only in prose documentation.

Correct: Constraints declared in the OpenAPI schema with format, pattern, enum, and other validation keywords.

Mistake 4: Human-Only Error Messages

Error messages designed for humans reading a UI (“Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later.”) are useless to agents. They contain no actionable information.

Mistake 5: No Rate Limit Communication
